Excavating HMS Invincible

Excavating a shipwreck is a complicated business. Invincible was first discovered by a local fisherman in  1979. It was made a protected site in 1980 and was then excavated each summer by archaeologists over  the next 10 years. A second excavation began in 2017 and continued every summer until 2019.

Underwater archaeology is expensive to do. The most recent excavation 2017-19 was funded by a LIBOR grant and by the National Lottery Heritage fund.
